[Editorial Note:]
Several people have commented that it’s cheaper to buy replacement Tesla battery packs than implied in the video – and we’ve now seen Tesla pricing that backs that up. We’re sorry if we implied otherwise, although the prices being quoted (~$12-20,000 in some cases) are still far from easily affordable for many.
We should also reiterate that the overwhelming majority of EVs never need a replacement battery, and that our theory as to what happened in this case was indeed a theory. Since this is a developing story, we’ve now seen access to new images that suggest a tarmac impact was involved, and some news reporting conflicts with earlier reports we’d read suggesting the driver was unaware of an impact.
Given it’s difficult to remain 100% accurate on every breaking and developing story, we hope these caveats and editorial notes can be taken on board by the viewer when watching this video, as we feel its remaining content still holds useful merit. [/Editorial]
While we’re winding down for the holidays – and many of our videos are less time-sensitive than usual, we heard from so many of you in the last week about a Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV owner in Canada – and the $60,000 Canadian quote he got for replacing his car’s battery pack… out of warranty… that we had to investigate.
Aside from the obvious questions (like why the car’s battery wasn’t covered under warranty, and why the battery pack was written off), we wanted to dig a little deeper to smash through some potential FUD later down the line, give you some context to the story – and make some educated guesses as to what we think actually might have happened.
