First car

Looking for a reliable first car under 10k, ideally. I really, really like Japanese culture, as well as their automotive industries. So, Toyota’s, Mazdas, Nissans, etc. would ideally like to get one of those. Don’t really want an SUV, just not sure what would be the most reliable year-round, as where I live, we get pretty bad snow. Would like something that’s fun to drive but not really concerned with power. Been looking at Miatas, but heard that snow/salt will rust them out quickly, even if you’re careful. I’d love to hear what the people of this subreddit have to say as I’m sort of stuck.
