If you think ‘off-roading’, chances are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) don’t come to mind. But the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is hoping to prove it shouldn’t be slept on.

That’s right, you wouldn’t even expect to see a family-focused mid-size SUV off the beaten track, but the Outlander PHEV is not only from the same segment as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Nissan X-Trail ePower, but it’s also a plug-in hybrid!

As we know, PHEVs typically combine a petrol engine with an electric motor as part of a series-parallel hybrid system, which inevitably means a decently sized (and heavy) battery pack is in tow, alongside the other limitations of such a vehicle.

But in this expert review, CarsGuide Journalist Tom White travels to Mitsubishi’s native Japan to see if the popular Outlander PHEV has what it takes to be a proper adventure vehicle. The answer may surprise you…
